The Department of Animal Production and Health announced that animals or animal products will not be imported into Sri Lanka from any country where bird flu has been reported.

Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, Director General of the Department, highlighted the measures taken to prevent the entry of the Avian Influenza A(H5N1) virus into Sri Lanka, which has been reported in several countries. She reassured that strict control measures are in place to protect the country.

Dr. Kothalawala stated that she frequently addresses media inquiries on this issue, reiterating that no animal products or animals are allowed from countries currently experiencing bird flu outbreaks.

She also noted that, for the first time, cattle in some U.S. states have been infected with avian influenza, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Despite this, she assured that disease control measures in Sri Lanka have been further strengthened and urged the public not to be unduly fearful.
