The Fundamental Rights petition filed by a businessman seeking an order restraining the Election Commission from holding the Presidential election in 2024 was today dismissed by the Supreme Court with Rs.100,000 cost.
The Supreme Court five-judge-bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Vijith Malalgoda, Justice Murdu Fernando, Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice S. Thurairaja observed that there is no merit in the petition and thereby dismissed the petition in limine.
The Attorney General and several intervenient petitioners raised preliminary objections urging the Supreme Court to dismiss this petition in limine (at the outset).
