The Court of Appeal ordered the release of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Ven. Galaboda Atte Gnanasara Thera on bail pending appeal.
On March 28, Gnanasara Thera was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by the Colombo High Court for making a hate speech that insulted the religious beliefs of the Muslim community. He was released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each.
The Colombo High Court had earlier rejected his bail application, stating that no exceptional circumstances justified his release.
